The Hidden Cost of Wi-Fi Upgrades: Licences, Switching, and Cabling
The access point is rarely the whole bill when upgrading Wi-Fi. A 2026 Wi-Fi 7 refresh in Singapore usually needs a licence seat for every new AP, often a faster, higher-power switch, and sometimes new cabling. Those three lines can match or exceed the cost of access points themselves. Ask for them on the first quote. Do not price them in after the PO for the APs has gone out.

What sits on the quote besides the access point?
Four main lines, one of them is the access points.
| Bucket | What you are paying for | When it surprises people |
|---|---|---|
| Access points | CW-917x (or leftover MR / CW916x) | This is the line everyone compares |
| Wireless licences | One Meraki seat per AP, for a term | Co-term can move the whole org’s end date when you add seats |
| Switching and power | Multi-gig ports and enough PoE (often 802.3bt on high-tier APs) | Old 1G PoE+ stacks cannot feed a top-tier Wi-Fi 7 AP at full radios |
| Cabling and mounts | Cat6A (or tested Cat6), new drops, heavier mounts | Long Cat5e will not train above 1G; some 9178-class units need a different bracket |
Why do licences feel “hidden”?
Meraki APs do not work without a cloud license. The hardware quote looks cheap if the license is missing.
Co-term: adding APs mid-term recalculates the organisation’s common end date across all devices, even those not affected by the upgrade. “License more devices” and “Renew” are not the same action.
Subscription: the end date stays; you add license seats and bind the network. You still pay for every AP.
You cannot mix co-term and subscription in one organisation.
That mechanic is in the licensing guide. Over a three- or five-year term the seats are a headline, not a footnote.
When does the switch become the project?
When the new AP has a 2.5G, 5G or 10G port and wants more power than the old PoE+ closet can give.
| Closet today | What a Wi-Fi 7 AP will do | Buyer decision |
|---|---|---|
| 1G PoE+ only | Link stays at 1G; high-tier APs may turn radios down | Keep a smaller Wi-Fi 7 model, or fund a switch refresh |
| Multi-gig but PoE+ only | Port is fast; AP still starves | Budget 802.3bt (PoE++) where the datasheet asks for it |
| Multi-gig + PoE++ | Path can feed the radio | Size how many APs per switch so the power budget holds |
A Wi-Fi 7 AP on a 1G port will not show multi-gig. That is not a radio fault but an uplink limitation. See the multi-gig article.
When is cabling the surprise?
When the existing infrastructure is an old Cat5e, poorly terminated, or longer than the installer admitted. In a Singapore fit-out, opening a ceiling or wall-partition in a live office costs more than the cable itself.
Ask for a sample of existing runs to be tested before you lock AP count. New floors: specify Cat6 to the AP as default.
Mounts and weight matter on the highest indoor units. MR36 mount does not work on the new CW models.
What should a first quote include so you can compare vendors?
AP model and quantity
Licence model (co-term vs subscription), term, and seat count
Switch model, port speed, PoE class, and how many APs per switch
Cabling assumption: reuse, test and relocate, or new drop
Staging, mounting, and whether after-hours work is in or out
If a quote is AP-only, it is not cheaper. It is usually incomplete unless you are doing a 1-to-1 technical refresh and are on co-term licensing.
FAQ
Can we reuse the old PoE switch and only swap APs?
Sometimes, on a smaller Wi-Fi 7 model. Not as a default for the top of the CW-917x range.
Do licences transfer from the old MR units?
On Co-term, the LIC-MR license works on both older Meraki models and new Catalyst models. On Subscription, a separate LIC-CW license is needed for Wi-Fi 7 access points.
Should we delay Wi-Fi 7 until we can fund switches?
If the infrastructure in the closet cannot change this year, buy a Wi-Fi 7 AP that can live on what you have — or keep healthy 6E. The benefits of Wi-Fi 7 are not limited to increased throughput, so you still get benefits from the upgrade.
Send the current AP count, switch generation, and whether the org is co-term or subscription. Megatron Technology will price radios, seats, power and cable as one scope — not an AP unit price that falls apart at install.
