Understanding Cisco Wi-Fi Access Point Naming (CW-917x Series Explained)
Short answer: On current Cisco indoor Wi-Fi 7 access points, CW means Cisco Wireless, 91 is the enterprise family, 7 is Wi-Fi 7, the next digit is the performance tier (2 / 4 / 6 / 8), and the last letter is the form factor (I internal antenna, E external, H wall plate, F directional / special). CW9174I is therefore a mid-tier Wi-Fi 7 indoor AP with built-in antennas. The same metal can run Meraki dashboard or Catalyst / IOS-XE. The name does not encode PoE class, uplink speed or licence term — those sit on the datasheet and the quote.

Why did Cisco stop calling new APs “MR”?
MR was the Meraki wireless product line (MR36, MR46, MR56, MR57 and the rest). New Wi-Fi 7 indoor hardware uses the CW91xx name because the same access point can join Meraki cloud or Catalyst wireless, depending on how it is claimed and licensed.
If a dashboard still shows MR units, those APs are valid. They are simply not what you should put on a 2026 purchase order unless you are matching a spare. New indoor Wi-Fi 7 quotes in Singapore are almost always a CW-917x SKU.
Older Wi-Fi 6E shared hardware already used CW916x (for example CW9166I). 916 vs 917 is the generation digit, not a random model number.
What does each part of a CW-917x name mean?

A trailing letter is not decoration. Ordering I when the site needs E means the unit arrives without antenna ports.
What do the suffix letters I, E, H and F mean?

Outdoor and industrial units use a different list. Do not hang an indoor I in a loading bay and treat the suffix as optional.
How do the 9172, 9174, 9176 and 9178 tiers differ?
The middle digits are the only part of the name that tracks “how much AP.” They still do not replace a datasheet.

If the closet is 1G PoE+ only, the name CW9178I is a warning, not a compliment. Either add switching to the scope or step down a tier. Sizing rules live in the AP choice guide.

The string never encodes:
PoE class at full radios (often 802.3bt on 9176 / 9178)
Whether the closet is 1G, 2.5G, 5G or 10G

Treat the name as a family decoder. Treat the quote as metal + licence + switch + cable.
How should you write the SKU on a Singapore purchase order?
Use the full token: CW9174I, not “9174” and not “Meraki Wi-Fi 7 AP.” Add the licence SKU on a separate line (co-term wireless key or subscription seat). If the operating model is Catalyst, say so on the same line so the distributor does not ship a Meraki-only assumption.
Cisco and authorised distributors fulfil the hardware. Megatron does not hold a walk-in warehouse. Staging is available so the named SKU is ready to mount when it lands.
FAQ
Is CW9174 the same as MR74?
No. There is no MR74 in this scheme. Map old MR units by role (entry / mid / high), not by matching the digits.
Does “91” mean 2021?
No. 91 is the family prefix on this generation of Cisco Wireless APs. 7 is the Wi-Fi 7 marker.
Can one CW body be Meraki or Catalyst?
Yes, on the current shared hardware list, subject to claim and licence. The name stays CW either way.
Should we buy CW916x to save money?
Not as a new 2026 indoor standard. Keep installed 916x if it is performing. New buy is 917x unless a leftover 6E SKU is the only unit that fits a constraint you have written down.
